Tests continue at office building after contamination found
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) — More testing is underway at a Vermont building that housed various state offices until high levels of industrial chemicals were found in the soil and air.
The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation says a plan is being formed to mitigate contamination at the Calderwood Building in St. Johnsbury.
The Caledonian Record reports that several state departments had offices in the building until 2017, when it failed air quality tests. Testing of the soil also found chemical contamination.
A consultant’s report says the building owners hope to bring it back into operation, but want to fully understand the problem first. It also says mitigation work could be constrained by financial limitations.
Old dry cleaning operations in the area are believed to be the source of the contamination.
