Bike Ride In Memory Of City Bike Shop Owner Held

A bike ride to benefit the Wilkes-Barre YMCA Livestrong Program and in the memory of city bicycle shop owner Tom Jones was held Sunday, Sept. 9, in Drums. The Tom Jones Memorial Benefit, a 25-mile and 10-mile bike ride was in memory of Jones, who owned Around Town Bicycles and previously, Sickler’s Bike Shop. Jones, who died August, 27, 2017, organized group rides on Saturday morning for 26 weeks each year as well as occasional special weekend rides in areas outside the Wyoming Valley. “Schnick schnack” was a term he used occasionally during the rides. Sunday’s benefit rides started and ended at Vesuvio’s Pizzeria and Ristorante in Drums. More than 60 riders signed up. About 20 cyclists rode despite cool temperatures and a steady rain. About 70 people attended a post ride lunch at the restaurant which included live music, a staple at Tom Jones special events. All proceeds will benefit the Tom Jones Alumni Scholarship Fund for the Wilkes-Barre YMCA Livestrong Program. The fund helps people who need but cannot otherwise afford to continue membership at the YMCA. For information, contact Linda Reilly at 570-970-5022. Organizers and participants included, from left, Phil Cable, Bob Kelley, Scott Seeherman, Lenny Trilio, Ken Balmer, Joe Sabatini, Lee Frantz, and Mark Ercoloni.
