OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Mike Fiers (FY’-urz) makes his first start since the Athletics acquired him Detroit earlier this week. The right-hander will pitch at the Coliseum tonight against Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fiers is 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA this season and 2-2 with a 1.96 ERA over his last seven starts.
MIAMI (AP) — Matt Carpenter has four homers in five games heading into the Cardinals’ series finale in Miami tonight. Carpenter hit his 30th home run in a 3-2 win Monday, becoming the first left-handed Cardinal to hit 30 home runs since Jim Edmonds hit 42 in 2004, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Golfers are scrambling to get in some practice today ahead of the PGA Championship, which starts tomorrow at Bellerive in St. Louis. Practice time was limited yesterday due to heavy rain. Tiger Woods only managed to play five holes, on a course he hasn’t seen in 17 years.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Cardinals fans have a new menu option during home games this season. The Arizona Republic reports that University of Phoenix Stadium will serve a seven-pound Gridiron Burger for $75. It features five 1/3 pound burger patties, five all-beef hot dogs, five bratwursts, 20 slices of American cheese, eight slices of bacon, eight chicken tenders, 12 ounces of fries, lettuce, pickles and tanker sauce, on a 10-inch bun. Anyone who can finish in under an hour will receive a Cardinals jersey and get their photo on the scoreboard.
