Gunshots Send Golfers Scrambling For Cover

June 19, 1990

CAMILLUS, N.Y. (AP) _ Rifle shots rang out along the back nine of a golf course, sending about 100 golfers scrambling for cover, but police don’t think the shooter was after people.

″It appears someone was shooting at targets or birds or squirrels or something and the shots went over into the golf course,″ Camillus Police Sgt. Lloyd Perkins said Monday. ″We do not believe it was a sniper.″

Dave Rustay and his friends were teeing off on the Westvale Golf Club’s 16th hole at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday when someone on the 13th green shouted a warning.

″We thought he said, ’Nice shot,‴ recounted Rustay, 26.

″But he was really saying they were shooting at us. We didn’t really know what was going on. That’s why it was so frightening.″

An estimated 20 shots were fired.

Rustay and his friends took cover, then raced to a nearby pro shop to summon help.

The Onondaga Sheriff’s Department searched for the shooter by helicopter but found nothing.
