German Accused in 1983 Bombing Arrested In Yemen

June 1, 1995

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) _ A close associate of the accused terrorist Carlos the Jackal was arrested in Yemen on Thursday on charges stemming from a deadly bombing 12 years ago.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed a report by Focus magazine that Johannes Weinrich had been arrested by Yemeni authorities in a suburb of Aden.

The Munich weekly Focus, in an advance release to other news media, said German authorities had been tracking Weinrich, a German citizen, for months.

``The arrest was made in close cooperation with Yemen police officials,″ the magazine said, adding that Weinrich was caught by surprise and offered no resistance.

Weinrich, a member of the extreme-left Revolutionary Cells, was sought in connection with the 1983 bombing of the French culture center in Berlin, which killed one person and injured 23 others.

Carlos the Jackal, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, was also charged in connection with the bombing, as well as other attacks. He was arrested in Sudan on Aug. 14 and is awaiting trial in a French jail.

It was not immediately clear when Weinrich might be returned to Germany.
