Local’s TBT team into semifinals
Matt Mitchell, a Blackhawk Christian graduate, finally has a team into the semifinals of The Basketball Tournament. His Eberlein Drive, a seventh seed, upset top-seeded Team Challenge ALS 78-67 in Atlanta on Sunday.
Mitchell, general manager of the Drive, has had a team in TBT, a $2-million winner-take-all event for all five years of its existence.
The Drive was paced by Jerome Randle’s 29 points and will next play in Baltimore against Team Jimmer, the Jimmer Fredette-led squad that knocked out the Fort Wayne Champs, a team made up of mostly former Mad Ants players, in the round of 16.
ESPN will broadcast the Drive vs. Team Jimmer game live at 9 p.m. Thursday.
Mitchell played four years of basketball at Olivet Nazarene, an NAIA school, and he lives in Crown Point. Among his roster of players are Willie Reed and Christian Watford, a former Indiana University and Mad Ants player.
