SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A 17-year-old youth is facing murder and firearms charges in connection with Springfield's third homicide in less than a week.

Officers responding to reports of shots fired found the victim, 22-year-old Rakeem Nixon, in front of an address on Lucerne Road suffering from several gunshot wounds at about 3 p.m. Sunday. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators, acting on descriptions given by witnesses, tracked the suspect down at about 8 p.m. Sunday.

His name was not given because of his age. An arraignment is expected Monday.

What led up to the shooting was not immediately released.

The shooting comes on the heels of two fatal stabbings last week. The city has had seven homicides this year.
