Mother’s share their milk with babies in need

January 17, 2019

The Lee County Health Department opened a breast milk donation site Wednesday afternoon. The department is a Milk Depot for the not-for-profit Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes where women can donate their extra milk for babies in need after going through a screening process. Laura Sharp, of Dixon, was the first donor to the milk depot. Within the first 20 minutes the milk depot has received two donations of milk. Donated milk is tested and pasteurized and then goes mostly to infants in neonatal intensive care units that don’t have enough mother’s milk and can’t drink formula, especially premature babies, who are at greater risk for health problems without the milk. The Milk Depot is located at the health department, 309 S. Galena Ave. Suite 100, in Dixon. Call 815-284-3371, go to lchd.com or find the health department on Facebook for more information.
