Moore Farms Botanical Garden will go to the dogs Saturday

LAKE CITY, S.C. – One hundred percent of the proceeds from Moore Farms Botanical Garden’s upcoming Dog Daze event from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday will benefit the Florence Area Humane Society and animals like Ellie and Bert, two mixed-breed dogs who were abandoned at a mobile home park.

Residents said Ellie and Bert had been on their own for four to five months when the Florence Area Humane Society rescued them. A good Samaritan in the mobile home park had been feeding the pair. It was clear that Bert had been struck by a car at one point, but he had only minor injuries.

“They’re great dogs,” Florence Area Humane Society volunteer Jayne Boswell said. “They’re friendly; they love people and children.”

Bert and Ellie are 2 years old and are brother and sister. Ellie has been spayed, but Bert is intact. Bert is also heartworm positive and requires treatment. Both walk well on a leash and are house broken. They have been waiting for their forever homes at the Florence Area Humane Society for one month. The adoption fee for Ellie and Bert is $85 each.

Approximately 2,000 animals find themselves at the Florence Area Humane Society per year, and some of them require medical treatment, vaccinations or other specialized care. For instance, there are nine cats at the shelter whose owner died. Two are diabetic and require medication.

“The needs are so great,” Boswell said. “We do everything from medicine to milk replacement to heartworm treatment for animals who were never given a preventative.”

She said proceeds generated by Dog Daze will go a long way toward ensuring animals at the Florence Area Humane Society are well cared for while awaiting adoption.

“There’s so many animals out there that are waiting for a great home,” Boswell said. “Our adoption rate is about 50 to 60 percent. I wish it were 95 percent. Our goal is to place every one of them in a home.”

Admission to Dog Daze is $5 per human. Human snacks will be available for $1, and dog treats are free. Dogs must remain on a leash at all times.
