Nationals sign pitcher Anibal Sanchez to two-year deal

December 27, 2018

The Washington Nationals have signed right-handed pitcher Anibal Sanchez to a two-year contract to bolster the bottom of their rotation.

The deal includes a team option for the 2021 season.

Sanchez pitched for the NL East rival Atlanta Braves last year and went 7-6 with a 2.83 ERA and a career-best 1.08 WHIP in 24 starts. His rate of 8.9 strikeouts per nine innings in each of the last two seasons have been some of the best marks of his 13-year MLB career.

The Venezuelan made most of his career with the Marlins and Tigers before his lone season with the Braves.

The Nationals already signed one starting pitcher this offseason, Patrick Corbin, but then traded Tanner Roark to Cincinnati. Sanchez, 34, likely will fill a hole as Washington’s No. 4 or No. 5 starter.
