Qatar Wins World Cup Qualifier
HONG KONG (AP) _ Mohamed Salem Al-Enazi scored three goals as Qatar routed Malaysia 5-1 Sunday in the opener of Asian Group Three qualifying for the 2002 World Cup.
Palestine tied Hong Kong 1-1 in the second game of the doubleheader,
Malaysia went ahead when Rosdi Talib scored in the 10th minute, but Al-Enazi scored one minute later and got the go-ahead goal in the 36th.
Mubarak Mostafa Fazli converted a penalty kick in the 50th after a hand ball called on Khairil Zainal. Al-Enazi got his third goal in the 59th minute and Jassim Yousuf Al-tamimi scored in the 75th.
In the other game, Emad Kair scored for the Palestinians in the 63rd minute and Chan Ho-man tied it with a header in the 72nd.
Hong Kong’s John Moore and Palestine’s Osama Abualia were ejected for receiving two yellow cards apiece.
Each team plays two more games in Hong Kong before moving to Qatar later in the month for the second half of group play. The group winner joins Bahrain, Iran and Saudi Arabia in the 10-nation Asian finals, which will produce two qualifiers for the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea.
