Warehouse Fire Destroys Boats
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) _ A fire in a warehouse without a sprinkler system on Thursday destroyed most of the 125 boats stored there, authorities said.
Firefighters had trouble finding working hydrants, so they used water from nearby Lake Chickamauga, said Hamilton County’s emergency services spokesman, Bruce Garner.
They kept the blaze from spreading to a nearby paint shop and another 300 boats stored at the marina. It was too soon to tell exactly how many of the boats were destroyed, Garner said.
``It wasn’t a total loss. We managed to save some of the building and some of the boats,″ he said.
Oil from the boats’ motors seeped about 100 yards into Harrison Bay.
Garner said the cleanup efforts would likely continue through tomorrow.
Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire.
