Girls hockey | Halverson’s hat trick sparks Rockets
Rochester John Marshall has some ups and downs through its first three games. The Rockets went winless in those non-conference matchups, playing well at times and struggling at others.
Saturday, there were few downs, mostly ups. JM scored four times in the first period en route to a 6-2 victory against Austin in a Big Nine Conference girls hockey game at the Rochester Recreation Center.
Erin Bickler gave Austin a 1-0 lead 5:41 in, but it was all JM after that.
The Rockets’ top line accounted for all of their goals, led by senior Ally Halverson, who had a hat trick and one assist. Ashley Koehler scored twice and Greta Freed once. Freed also had two assists.
JM (1-0-0, 1-3-0) received 31 saves from Anysia Heimer.
“The girls played well (Saturday),” JM coach Josh Chapman said. “Our defensive zone (play) was much better than the last couple games. Our top line played great and Anysia looked good in net. She looked confident coming out and making big saves.”
Mikiah Rumsey also scored for Austin (0-1-0 Big Nine, 0-1-0 overall).
The Rockets face Red Wing at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tria Rink in St. Paul. The game will be webcast live on StateOfHockey.com.
