Police patrols increased after shooting at Haverhill park
HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) — Police are stepping up patrols around a Haverhill park after two men were shot over the weekend on a basketball court adjacent to a baseball field where young teens were playing.
An “outraged” Mayor James Fiorentini announced the increased police presence at Swasey Field on Sunday in response to Saturday afternoon’s shooting.
Parents pulled their children from the baseball field after the shots were fired around 4 p.m. The two victims were taken to area hospitals in unknown condition.
Larry O’Brien, president of Haverhill Senior Baseball, says the league has canceled all spring and summer games scheduled for the field.
Fiorentini said no shooting will be tolerated in Haverhill, especially at a park. The mayor said he’s confident police will find the person or people responsible for the “disgusting event.”
