San Francisco 73, Notre Dame, Calif. 69
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ M.J. Nodilo scored 14 points and Zerrick Campbell made a game-saving steal as San Francisco survived a scare from tiny College of Notre Dame to win 73-69 on Tuesday.
Gerald Zimmerman added 10 points, all in the first half, for San Francisco (2-1). Nodilo made four of five 3-point shots.
Rodney Wheeler had 19 points and Cory Page and Alex Grimes had 13 each for the College of Notre Dame (3-2), a non-scholarship NCAA Division II program that has no players taller than 6-foot-5.
The Argonauts, who were outrebounded 31-20, never led but pulled within one point three times in the second half.
After Jamal Cobbs made a free throw with 16 seconds left to give San Francisco a 71-69 lead, Campbell stole the ball from Wheeler and converted two free throws with two seconds remaining for the final margin.
Notre Dame, facing a Division I opponent for the only time this season, fell behind 11-2 in the opening 3:12. Seven-foot San Francisco center Mark Nees, a junior whose previous career high was seven points, scored all eight of his points during that stretch.
Notre Dame steadied, however, and trailed only 44-37 at halftime. Grimes had nine points in the first half for the Argonauts.
San Francisco’s biggest lead was 22-10 with 11:11 remaining in the first half.
