Battle of the badges

September 5, 2018

The vampires were out Tuesday at the Quality Inn and Suites as the ninth annual Battle of the Badges began.

Community members were out in force as they donated blood to the American Red Cross and voted for either area law enforcement or the area firefighters.

Shayna Mavis, a North Platte firefighter, was one of the first to have her arm hooked up to one of the blood draw machines. Mavis has been with the fire department for 11 years.

“It’s fun competition between us and law enforcement, and it goes to help save lives,” Mavis said. “Being in the profession of firefighter, EMS, police, law enforcement, we see the need for it.”

Mavis said the blood drive helps to replenish the blood supplies so anybody that is having surgery or is involved in an accident can have the blood they need.

“Hopefully fire (is going to win),” Mavis said. “We need the win.”
