Air Bag Crushes Boy, 9, to Death
BOURNE, Mass. (AP) _ After his grandmother let him take the wheel, a 9-year-old boy crashed a car into an embankment of her driveway and was crushed to death when the air bag inflated.
Joseph A. Pagliarani III was driving his grandmother’s 1995 Mercury sedan in her driveway Sunday night, police Sgt. Joel Gould said.
After returning from a trip for ice cream, the boy’s grandmother, Shirley Pagliarani, 71, allowed the boy to drive the approximately 140-foot stretch of her driveway, police said.
Neither the boy nor the grandmother were wearing seat belts, and Gould said it wasn’t clear if a restraint could have saved the child’s life.
Pagliarani was ``very shook up and upset″ and was not charged in connection with the accident, Gould said. It is not illegal for an adult to allow a child to drive on private property.
