Police: Wilmington Man Beat Ex-girlfriend with Crucifix

BILLERICA -- A 39-year-old Wilmington man is accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend with a wooden crucifix.
On Wednesday, Torrey Smith was arrested by Billerica police on felony arrest warrants related to the Aug. 22 incident in Billerica.
He’s accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and an acquaintance. During the incident at his ex-girlfriend’s home, Smith assaulted an individual with a wooden crucifix, resulting in significant tissue damage to their nose, according to police.
Smith left before police arrived on scene.
Officer Rafael Mendez has been involved in the investigation of the August incident. When the officer on Wednesday pulled over a car for a civil motor vehicle infraction on Boston Road, he became suspicious that the car’s passenger was Smith.
After Smith initially provided Mendez with a fake identity, the officer positively identified him as Smith.
He was arrested on the warrants, and booked at the Billerica Police Department.
