Rochester scores first, but Bulls rally

The Rochester Grizzlies scored first on Saturday, but their rivals from North Iowa scored the rest.

The Bulls scored three consecutive goals over the final two periods to earn a 3-1 North American 3 Hockey League victory against the Grizzlies at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Grizzlies defenseman Brock Hildenbrand opened the scoring 6:43 into the game.

Hildenbrand netted a power-play goal. Assists went to Lucas Newman and Richard Szabo.

North Iowa took the lead for good midway through the second period when it scored twice in 67 seconds.

Matt Dahlseide scored at the 8:40 mark of the period to tie the score, then Marco Escobar scored the game winner 1:07 later.

Peter Verstegen added an insurance goal 33 seconds into to the third period to cap the scoring.

North Iowa (22-6-0 overall) outshot Rochester 29-22; Liam Kelly made 26 saves in the loss for Rochester (20-8-0).

The Grizzlies are back in action at 7:05 p.m. tonight for a New Year’s Eve game at Willmar.

NAHL Wilderness score six in victory over Bruins

AUSTIN — The Austin Bruins put 39 shots on goal, but Minnesota Wilderness goalie Ryan Fanti was up to the challenge.

Fanti made 37 saves and lifted his team to a 6-2 North American Hockey League victory against the Bruins on Saturday at Riverside Arena.

Andy Willis scored both goals for Austin (19-8-3), which trailed 2-0 after one period and 5-1 after two.

Brett Miller allowed four goals on 17 shots for Austin through 25:41, then Kyle McClellan made 13 saves over the final 34:19.

The Bruins play a New Year’s Eve game agains the Wilderness at 5 p.m. tonight at Cloquet.

USPHL Blue Ox pound Vipers in series sweep

The Kasson Vipers dropped a pair of U.S. Premier Hockey League games over the weekend to the Minnesota Blue Ox.

Kasson lost 10-3 on Saturday in Kasson, and lost 6-1 on Sunday at Coon Rapids.

Thomas Chaulk, Cameron Bennett and Ben Haas scored for the Vipers in Saturday’s loss. Kasson was outshot 76-17 in the game and allowed seven third-period goals.

On Sunday, the Blue Ox scored four times in the first period en route to the victory. Chaulk scored the lone goal for Kasson, which was outshot 73-24.

Kasson (8-24-1) hosts Steele County tonight.
