We should revisit Amelia Earhart’s local tie
It’s something of a footnote in local history, but it really should be much more.
We’re talking about Amelia Earhart, the pioneer aviator who, on this date in 1932, became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. It was an exceedingly extraordinary feat, as at the time, women held a subordinate role in society and young girls had few role models such as Earhart to look up to.
Three years later, Earhart visited Kankakee, where she spoke at a meeting of the Kankakee Business and Professional Women’s Club and spent the evening at the downtown Lafayette Hotel. The meeting was symbolic, as women, who had yet to enter the business world in significant numbers, drew inspiration from the now famous trendsetter.
