DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) _ Peter O'Malley, who brought Asian players to the major leagues when he owned the Los Angeles Dodgers, is helping expand baseball into Ireland.

O'Malley, an Irish American, is spending the Fourth of July in Dublin to open the country's first baseball facility. He paid for the construction of a youth field and an adult field at Corkagh Park.

``In the past, the children have been playing baseball on corners of rugby and soccer fields in Ireland, frequently being asked to relocate during a game,'' O'Malley said. ``Now the children and families of Dublin have their own field of dreams to enjoy the game of baseball.''

U.S. Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith was to throw out the first pitch Saturday. Also planned for this most American of holidays was a barbecue and exhibition games.

Ireland has had Little League baseball since 1993 and has 25 youth teams.
