Ford Plant Idled on Supplier Delay

June 16, 1998

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) _ Some 8,000 workers at Ford Motor Co.’s German subsidiary were idled Tuesday because a supplier of door and trunk locks for its Puma and Fiesta models stopped delivery last week.

Ford sent workers home on Monday as well, and spokesman Paul Schinhofen said that stalled production was costing it about $22 million a day.

Production at a plant in Britain that also produces the Fiesta and Puma models was also interrupted by the failed delivery. In all, production lagged by 2,500 cars a day, Schinhofen said.

The supplier, Kiekert GmbH, blamed a problem with its production software.

Ford representatives planned a visit to the supplier to see what is causing the delays, Schinhofen said.
