“Danny is an experienced and dynamic trial lawyer with an impressive record of public service,” said Mike Attanasio, chair of Cooley’s global litigation department. “His courtroom skills and Washington experience add further depth to our white collar bench and first-chair trial capability on the East Coast. We’re happy to welcome him to the private sector, where he will be an invaluable resource for our clients.”

Grooms held many significant positions during his 15-year career as a federal prosecutor. At the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia – an elite office known for its high-profile white collar and espionage prosecutions – he served as chief of the criminal division, overseeing all criminal investigations and 140 assistant US attorneys. He was also chief of the office’s national security and international crime unit and chief of its narcotics unit. Additionally, Grooms served in multiple senior roles at the US Department of Justice, including as an associate deputy attorney general, where he reported directly to the department’s second-highest ranking official and was responsible for a portfolio including all national security, drug and firearm enforcement nationwide.

In his varied roles as a federal prosecutor, Grooms tried many cases and argued numerous appeals. He has extensive experience in national security, international law, cybercrime, FARA, sanctions and export enforcement, FCPA, money laundering, RICO, opioid diversion, multijurisdictional investigations and working alongside numerous state and federal agencies on high-profile cases and joint task forces.

“Cooley’s elite platform and strategic vision offer the perfect opportunity to enter private practice,” said Grooms. “I am eager to leverage my experience as a federal prosecutor while working alongside my new colleagues within the firm’s thriving litigation practice to achieve continued successes for our clients.”

Grooms earned his JD, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School. He began his career in the public sector with the tax division at the Justice Department, joining through the Attorney General’s Honors Program in 2003, after completing a one-year clerkship with the Honorable Donald M. Middlebrooks at the Southern District of Florida.

The American Lawyer recently recognized Cooley among the preeminent global litigation departments, naming the firm an honorable mention in its biannual Litigation Department of the Year publication. The American Lawyer also named the firm a finalist for California Regional Litigation Department of the Year. Other publications have also lauded the rise of Cooley’s global litigation practice, including BTI Consulting Group, The Lawyer and Law360.
