Williamson schools coach Cline dies at age 70

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — Former coach Rod Cline, 70, of Lovely, Kentucky, died Dec. 22 after a long illness. He was the brother of Marshall University men’s basketball assistant coach Mark Cline.

Cline was born July 28, 1948, in Williamson, a son of the late Herbert B. “Hub” Cline and Golda Coleman Cline.

Cline was active in sports and graduated from Matewan High School in 1967 and went on to earn a bachelor’s in health and physical education from Marshall University and a master’s in health and physical education from East Tennessee State.

He was a Vietnam War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.

Cline coached football, baseball and girls basketball at Tug Valley High School. He also coached junior high girls basketball and middle school football at both Williamson and Lenore. His last coaching job before retirement was with Lady Wolfpack girls basketball at Williamson High School.
