American Musashimaru Wins at Spring Sumo Tournament, Now 5-2

OSAKA, Japan (AP) _ American champion Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani, improved his record at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament to 5-2 with a victory Saturday.

Musashimaru grabbed Aogiyama by the loin belt and shoved him out of the ring. The Hawaiian is tied with six others, two victories behind the leader.

Kotonowaka held to first place and improved to 7-0 with a victory over junior champion Musoyama.

Tied for second at 6-1 were grand champion Takanohana and champion Takanonami after both won Saturday.

In the 26-member juryo division, just below the top makuuchi division, American Percy Kipapa fell to 4-3 when he was defeated by Mutetsuyama (5-2).

Yamato, or American George Kalima, improved to 4-3 as he pushed out Kotokanyu (1-6).

Sunahama, or American William Hopkins, slipped to 2-5 when he was defeated by Shikishima (3-4).

In the top junior division, winless Nampu, American Keleo Kakeuoha, suffered his fourth straight loss and faced demotion, losing to Otsukasa. Sentoryu, or American Henry Armstrong Miller, was forced down by Okamoto’s thrust and his record slipped to 1-3.
