FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) _ The World Series champion Minnesota Twins concluded spring training Saturday with an 8-0 victory over the Portland Beavers, their Triple-A affiliate.
The teams played four extra innings to give Twins pitchers extra practice.
The Twins are scheduled to hold a light practice Sunday in Milwaukee’s County Stadium, where they open the regular season against the Brewers Monday.
″We’re just starting now - the easy part is over,″ Twins manager Tom Kelly said. ″We’ll have a small work-out tomorrow and then get to it.″
Minnesota starter Bill Krueger looked strong in his final spring-training game, allowing five hits in five innings. The left-hander finished the spring with a 2.95 ERA.
Gary Wayne and Mark Guthrie threw for the Twins.
Beavers starter Willie Banks, sent down by the Twins on Friday, pitched four innings and took the loss. He allowed six runs on nine hits.
Leading 2-0, the Twins scored four unearned runs in the third. Shane Mack and Chuck Knoblauch singled and Kirby Puckett reached on an error by third baseman Chip Hale, scoring Mack. Gene Larkin singled with two outs to score both runners and later scored on Pedro Munoz’s single.
In the fifth, the Twins scored two more unearned runs off reliever Mauro Gozzo.
Portland reliever Luis Garcia pitched three scoreless innings.
