School district considering three options for calendar of instruction days next year

NEEDLES – The local school board is looking at three calendar options for the 2019-20 school year and would like to hear community input on the subject. Contact the Needles Unified School District at needlesusd.org or 760-326-3891.

• Option 1 — School would begin Aug. 14; that month would have 13 days of school. Labor Day is Sept. 2 and students would have 20 days of classes that month. October would have 18 days of classes with Fall Break scheduled Oct. 14-18. In November, Veterans Day is the 11th, Thanksgiving Break would be Nov. 28-29 and students would have 20 days of classes. In December, winter break is scheduled from the 20th through the Jan. 3 and students would have 14 days of classes. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Jan. 20, students would have 19 days of classes that month. In February, President’s Day is on the 17th, which gives students 18 days of classes. In March, Spring Break would be the 23rd through the 27th, which gives students 17 days of classes. April 10 is Good Friday, April 12 Easter, April 20 would be Spring Vacation and students would get 21 days of classes. In May, Memorial Day is on the 25th and the last day of school would be the 29th, which gives students 20 days of classes.

• Option 2 — Start the school year on Aug. 19 with 10 days of classes that month. Students would receive 20 days of classes in September. In October, fall break would be scheduled for the 21st through 25th, providing 18 days of classes. Thanksgiving Break would be Nov. 27-29, providing 17 days of classes in November. Winter break would be Dec. 23 - Jan. 3 with students receiving 15 days of classes in Dec., 19 in January. February would see 18 days of classes. April would offer a spring vacation day on the 13th, providing 21 days of classes. May would see 20 days of classes with the last day of school on June 5.

• Option 3 would have classes starting Sept. 3. There would be no fall break in October, which gives students 23 days of classes. The first quarter ends Nov. 1, Thanksgiving Break would start Nov. 28, which gives students 20 days of classes. Winter break would continue from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3 providing 14 class days in December and 19 in January. February would feature 18 class days. March would have 17 class days, with spring break March 23 - 27. April would have 20 class days with a spring vacation day on April 20; May would have 20 days of classes as well. The last day of school would be June 11.
