Bronx teacher of immigrant kids is NY Teacher of the Year
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A teacher who immigrated to the United States and now teaches other new arrivals in the Bronx is New York’s Teacher of the Year.
The New York Board of Regents named Alhassan Susso as the 2019 honoree on Tuesday. Susso teaches social studies at International Community High School.
New York State United Teachers says Susso commutes two hours each way from his Poughkeepsie home to the school where he has taught since 2012.
The West Africa native wrote about his journey to America as a nearly blind teenager in the book, “The Light of Darkness: The Story of the Griots’ Son.”
Susso was a 2017 Top 50 finalist for the Global Teacher Prize awarded by the Rockefeller Foundation.
