Mobile Homes Burn On Sumter Lot

March 1, 1988

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) _ A fire spread through a mobile home sales lot Tuesday, destroying 45 homes, authorities said.

High wind and a lack of water hindered firefighters at Connor Mobile Homes. There were no injuries reported in the Tuesday morning fire.

The mobile homes were valued about about $10,000 each. About half the homes in the lot were destroyed.

″With the way the wind was blowing and just the three of us out here, there was nothing we could do. It got up under the houses and that was it,″ said Tony Cantrell, a Connor salesman.

Fire Department Captain Richard Newman said the department received a report of a grass fire and that the trailers were burning when firefighters arrived.
