Gaudenzi Wins Swedish Tennis
BASTAD, Sweden (AP) _ Unseeded Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy overcame the wind and fifth-seeded Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic to take the Swedish Open on Sunday for his third WTA career title.
``I tried to hit a lot on his forehand and play aggressive tennis,″ Gaudenzi said after a 7-5, 6-3 victory. ``But it wasn’t easy with the gusty winds.″
In his last four tournaments _ including a non-points challenger event _ Gaudenzi has made three finals. Last month, he got his second career victory, taking another clay-court tournament, in St. Poelten, Austria.
``I lost five consecutive finals before I managed to win my first title,″ Gaudenzi said. ``So for me, it’s fantastic every time I win a final.″
Gaudenzi earned $54,000 for winning here, in one of the world’s oldest-clay court events.
The 27-year-old Italian upset defending champion and top-seeded Magnus Norman in the semifinals on Saturday. The Swede was playing his first tournament since late May, when he injured his hip.
