Springfield man gets 40 years for mother’s death
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A Springfield man was sentenced to 40 years in prison after he was convicted of stabbing his mother to death because he didn’t like the rules she made for the home the pair shared.
The (Springfield) State Journal-Register (http://bit.ly/16nfIqj ) says Michael W. Seal was sentenced Friday for the November 2009 stabbing death of Darla Key.
Seal was convicted of first-degree murder last August after he represented himself during the trial.
Prosecutors say he stabbed Key after the 53-year-old created a list of rules for him to follow while he was living in her home. The rules forbade him from drinking alcohol on the property and required him to be employed.
Seal tried to convince a judge to grant a new trial, but that request was denied on Friday before sentencing.
