No. 1 seed Rice survives day of C-USA upsets

HUNTINGTON — Conference USA Player of the Year Nicole Lennon had 12 kills and 14.5 points Friday for Rice in a win against Charlotte to open the league tournament in Cam Henderson Center at Marshall.

Top-seeded Rice defeated eighth-seeded Charlotte, 3-0. The Owls completed the match in the third set, 25-23.

Lee Ann Cunningham of the Owls recorded 21 defensive digs and Anota Adekunle made four blocks. Charlotte’s Nya Steele had 25 assists.

NORTH TEXAS 3, FAU 1: The fifth-seeded Mean Green dropped the first set to fourth-seeded FAU, but powered through the next three.

FAU leaders were Valerie Valerian (18 digs), Karley York (43 assists) and Sarah Haeussler (11 blocks).

Sigourney Kame registered 16 kills for FAU and Massiel Matos posted 17 points.

SOUTHERN MISS 3, WESTERN KENTUCKY 2: The seventh-seeded Golden Eagles pulled a stunner against the second-seeded defending champion Hilltoppers.

Kylie Grandie recorded 15 kills for Southern Miss, followed by Catherine Repsher with 10. Repsher also had nine blocks and Sarah Bell delivered 45 assists.

WKU’s Lauren Matthews had 18 kills and 21 points.

FIU 3, UTSA 0: Nina Petranovic posted 12 kills and 14 points for sixth-seeded FIU in its upset of third-seeded UTSA in Friday’s final match. Abbie Hughes dished 30 assists and Dorina Klinger made four blocks.

Shelby Williams of UTSA had 12 digs on defense.
