Phillips Gets Career Hit No. 2,000

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Oakland second baseman Tony Phillips singled off the glove of Texas first baseman Lee Stevens to lead off the fourth inning Monday for his 2,000th career hit.

Phillips, a 16-year veteran, is currently hitting .244 on the season in his second tour of duty with the Athletics.

The hit was a hard grounder off Rangers’ starter John Burkett. The ball bounced off Stevens’ glove and into short right field.

Phillips received a warm reception from the crowd when the achievement was announced.

All but 42 of his hits have come in the American League.
