Lil E. Tee Wins Upset Victory in Kentucky Derby
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Jockey Pat Day rode long shot Lil E. Tee to a most unexpected victory in the 118th Kentucky Derby Saturday, leaving the favorite, Arazi, in the dust.
″Thank you Jesus, all in God’s good time,″ the jubilant Day said after his first victory in 10 tries in the Derby. It was about the only thing he hadn’t won at Churchill Downs, where he has been the dominant rider for years.
Bettors who picked Lil E. Tee to win collected $35.60 for a $2 wager, the biggest payoff since Ferdinand paid $37.40 in 1986.
Casual Lies finished second, one length behind Lil E. Tee, and Dance Floor was third, another 3 1/4 lengths back.
Arazi, which fell victim to the favorite jinx, faltered in the stretch and finished eighth. The last favorite to win the Kentucky Derby was Spectacular Bid in 1979.
