Leipzig Olympic Bid Panel Official Fired
DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) _ The business manager of Leipzig’s 2012 Olympic bid committee was fired Saturday because he served in a guard unit of East Germany’s Stasi secret police.
Dirk Thaerichen, who already had stepped aside provisionally, was dismissed by the committee’s supervisory board.
Leipzig is considered an outsider in the race for the 2012 Olympics. Eight other cities are bidding, including New York, Moscow, Paris and London.
