Bubba Wells Sidelined Because of Stress Fracture in Left Leg,0178
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Bubba Wells, Austin Peay’s star forward and the nation’s leading returning scorer, will be sidelined for at least a month because of a left leg stress fracture, officials said Tuesday.
This is the second time in less than two years that the 6-foot-5, 230-pound senior has had to sit out because of a leg stress fracture.
He sustained a similar injury to his right leg during the 1995 Ohio Valley Conference championship game and underwent surgery to have a steel rod placed into that leg.
He is expected to undergo similar surgery Wednesday.
``This is a huge blow to the team,″ said Austin Peay coach Dave Loos. ``But we as a team have to take his example. He worked his way through this the last time and is intent on doing it again this time.″
Wells averaged 26.3 points a game as a junior. He was the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament’s most valuable player after leading the Govs to the tourney title.
