Critics Name Best Plays, Musicals

NEW YORK (AP) _ ``Jitney,″ August Wilson’s drama about taxi-cab drivers in 1970s Pittsburgh, was named best play, and ``James Joyce’s `The Dead,″ based on the Irish author’s famous short story, was chosen as best musical Tuesday by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle.

It was the seventh time Wilson, author of such plays as ``Fences″ and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,″ has won a Drama Critics’ Circle award.

``Copenhagen,″ Michael Frayn’s play about a mysterious meeting between two physicists on opposing sides during World War II, was picked as best foreign play. The Circle has the option of giving a best foreign or best American play award, depending on what wins the best-play prize.
