Inmate killed at troubled USVI prison
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) — A troubled prison in the U.S. Virgin Islands is on lockdown after authorities say a man fatally stabbed another inmate.
Bureau of Corrections Acting Director Basil Richards says 61-year-old Humphrey Balson was stabbed in the chest near the prison’s kitchen. Balson was serving a life sentence for charges including first-degree murder.
Richards said Thursday that 45-year-old Ralph Brathwaite was charged with first-degree murder. He was serving a 60-year sentence for rape.
The killing occurred at the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility in St. Croix.
In 2011, U.S. authorities complained of dangerous conditions at the prison run by the territory.
