Lawyer Whose Clients Said to Include Drug Dealers is Shot
MONTREAL (AP) _ A lawyer whose clients included alleged organized crime bosses and Colombian drug traffickers was shot to death Monday as he drove to work.
Sidney Leithman, 54, was waiting at an intersection when a man walked up to his car and fired several shots through the window, then fled on foot, police said. Leithman’s associate, Julio Peris, confirmed the slaying.
Police gave few other details.
Leithman and Peris last year defended three Colombians accused of importing half a ton of cocaine, at the time the largest cocaine seizure in Canada. The Colombians were convicted last spring.
Another of Leithman’s clients was Frank Cotroni, described by the Quebec Police Commission as a Montreal underworld boss. Cotroni is serving an eight- year sentence for a 1981 slaying in a Montreal club.
Leithman was also the lawyer for one of four people accused in a daring $2.8 million Brink’s truck holdup, in downtown Montreal in 1976. The thieves commandeered the truck by holding off the guards with an anti-aircraft gun.
