Man charged with murder in girlfriend’s death in Maine
HARTFORD, Maine (AP) — A man has been charged in the death of his longtime girlfriend inside their home, state police in Maine have said.
On Thursday evening, Rondon Athayde, 46, was charged with the murder of Ana Cordeiro, 41. Athayde is being held at the Oxford County Jail and is expected to appear in court on Friday.
Athayde alerted authorities in the town of Hartford in the early hours of Thursday, and they arrived at his home to find Cordeiro’s body, police said. The two are from Brazil and moved to Maine two years ago from Miami, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said.
The state medical examiner’s office determined that the death was a homicide, but the cause is not being released, police said. The couple’s two children, ages 3 and 4, were in the care of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services on Friday.
State police said they didn’t know if Athayde had hired an attorney. A call to the Oxford County District Attorney’s Office was not immediately returned.
