Gas Explosion Kills Three, Injures Five

January 21, 1987

NUREMBERG, West Germany (AP) _ A natural gas explosion destroyed a four-story apartment building early today, killing three people, injuring five and leaving at least two others missing, police said.

Police spokesman Roland Friedle said a 22-year-old woman was pulled from the wreckage nine hours after the 1 a.m. explosion, and that rescue workers with dogs were searching for more survivors.

He said only parts of the building’s walls remained standing.

Residents told the building’s caretaker they smelled gas and he went to the basement to check just moments before the blast, Friedle told The Associated Press from this historic Bavarian city.
