Trump offers prayers for Venezuelans during civil unrest

May 2, 2019

President Trump offered prayers Thursday for the people of Venezuela, saying their “brutal repression” by embattled leader Nicolas Maduro must end soon.

At a National Day of Prayer event at the White House, the president said he was “sending prayers to the people of Venezuela in their righteous struggle for freedom.”

“The brutal repression of the Venezuelan people must end, and it must end soon,” Mr. Trump said. “We’ll be there to help, and we are there to help.”

The country was wracked by street protests this week and violent responses by government forces. Mr. Maduro appears to have weathered the unrest, at least temporarily, despite the Trump administration’s efforts to support U.S.-recognized interim President Juan Guiado.
