Delaware officer stabbed in leg during foot chase

CLAYMONT, Del. (AP) — Authorities say a Delaware police officer was stabbed in a leg as he tried to arrest a man suspected of trespassing.

Authorities tell the Delaware News Journal that the New Castle County police officer was stabbed after he chased the trespassing suspect late Saturday night.

The officer’s name hasn’t been released.

A matching the suspect’s description had been seen trespassing in the backyards of several homes near Claymont. One officer found the suspect walking and tried to stop him, but he ran. County police say the officer was stabbed during a struggle on an Interstate 95 off-ramp.

Police said the 17-year police veteran’s injury was minor.

A 20-year-old man faces several charges, including second-degree assault.
