Football: Summer Creek’s Bush named District 22-6A MVP
Bryan Bush spent the first two weeks of the 2018 football season on Summer Creek’s junior varsity football team.
Bulldogs’ head coach Kenny Harrison decided to call up the sophomore signal-caller when District 22-6A started, and Bush didn’t disappoint.
Bush and the Bulldogs made school history by reaching the regional semifinal round in the playoffs for the first time.
Bush was rewarded for his hard work and was named the District 22-6A Most Valuable Player that was released this week.
Bush finished his sophomore campaign going 136-of-222 for 1,970 yards and threw 29 touchdowns for the Bulldogs, who finished the season 9-4.
The right handed quarterback also had 193 carries for 1,301 yards with 17 touchdowns.
Atascocita junior quarterback Brice Matthews was named the district’s Offensive Player of the Year by throwing for over 3,280 yards with 41 touchdowns.
Matthews was a first-year starter for the Eagles, who averaged 51.2 points per game on offense with a total of 86 touchdowns. The junior quarterback had a 64 percent completion percentage and averaged 283.2 yards per game. The Eagles soaring offense averaged 466.5 yards per game this season.
Atascocita senior defensive linemen Bryton Thompson was named the district’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Thompson had 92 tackles with five and half sacks for the Eagles. The four-year letterman had 24 tackles for loss, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
Atascocita head coach Craig Stump was named the Coach of the Year in the district, guiding the Eagles to an 11-2 season and reaching the regional semifinals for the fourth straight year.
Dobie’s Darius Hale was named the Newcomer of the Year on the District 22-6A team.
