Impaired Woman Admits Throwing Baby In River, But Police Aren’t Sure
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) _ The Fire Department canceled a search of the Delaware River for a 7-month- old girl who may have been thrown into the chilly water by a mentally impaired woman.
The woman admitted throwing the infant into the river, but authorities didn’t know whether to believe her because she is impaired and changed her story many times, police said.
The woman, Wanda F. Reed, 30, a housemate of the baby’s 19-year-old mother, Rebecca McGuinn, was in police custody Monday but has not been charged, said police Sgt. Robert Orlowski.
The Fire Department called off its search shortly before dusk Monday after divers checked the river for a second day, said Batallion Chief Frank Zoda.
Tracking dogs assisted the search.
