Sound the alarms: Hatch chiles are here in San Antonio
The Hatch are coming! The Hatch are coming!
Strap on that tricorn hat and saddle up, y’all. The Southwest’s favorite chile is now in season and area grocers are prepared to handle a stampede of customers hungry for its distinctive taste.
Both San Antonio Whole Foods locations are expecting a truck loaded with the pale green pods to roll in late today, Aug. 1. The stores, located in the Alamo Quarry Market and The Vineyard Shopping Centers, will fire up their roasters Thursday, Aug. 2, to start toasting the bounty for eager customers.
Central Market at 4821 Broadway will follow a week later on Aug. 8 with its own roasting operation.
Both Whole Foods and Central Market expect to have roasted Hatch chiles available for purchase for at least three weeks or longer depending on this year’s harvest.
