Stankina, Perez win World Race Walking Cup events
PODEBRADY, Czech Republic (AP) _ Irina Stankina of Russia finished first in the women’s 10,000-meter race and Jefferson Perez of Ecuador won the men’s 20,000-meter at the 18th IAAF World Race Walking Cup on Saturday.
Stankina won the event in 41 minutes, 52 seconds, winning the $20,000 first prize. She was closely followed by another Russian, Olympiada Ivanova, who finished second in 41:59. Yan Gu of China was third in 42:15.
Tamara Kovalenko, also of Russia, finished eighth in 42:51, as Russia captured the team title. Italy was second and China third.
The United States finished 15th, after the top American finisher, Victoria Herazo, finished 51st.
In the second event of the day, the men’s 20,000-meter race, Jefferson Perez of Ecuador, last year’s Olympic champion, finished first in 1:18:24.
Second among the 144 competitors from 40 countries was Mexico’s Daniel Garcia in 1:18:27, and Ilya Markov of Russia finished third in 1:18:30.
Among teams, Russia finished first, Belarus second and Mexico was third. The United States was 20th.
The 50,000-meter race is scheduled for Sunday.
