Russia Leads Germany 2-0 in Tennis
MOSCOW (AP) _ Russia, playing without stars Anna Kournikova and Elena Likhovtseva, took a 2-0 lead over Germany in Fed Cup play on Saturday when Tatiana Panova beat Andrea Glass 6-3, 6-1 and Yelena Makarova defeated Anke Huber 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).
Germany played the World Group playoffs without its top player, Steffi Graf.
Anke Huber, ranked 14th in the world, was playing in her first match since withdrawing from the French Open with an Achilles tendon injury. She saved three match points in the second set before losing the tiebreaker.
On Sunday, Panova will face Huber, while Makarova will play Glass.
The winner will advanced to the 1999 World Group I. The loser will compete in World Group II.
Saturday’s win took Panova’s win-loss record in Federation Cup singles to 5-0.
