Travel Through The Past On Next Best Of Our Backyard Tour

August 1, 2018

Celebrate the vast history and rich heritage of the region during the next Best of Our Backyard Tour.

Presented by Times-Shamrock Communications, the Sunday, Aug. 12, excursion takes guests on a journey through Northeast Pennsylvania’s beginnings with guided tours of Lackawanna County Coal Mine, Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum, Electric City Trolley Museum and Steamtown National Historic Site.

The tours give residents a chance to taste, see and do things unique to Northeast Pennsylvania, according to Times-Shamrock regional marketing consultant Vanessa Baptista. The previous history tour was a hit, she said, and she expects this tour, presented by PPL Electric Utilities, will be another great time for history buffs.

“We had done the historical buildings tour, and people really loved that, but, one, going to the coal mine (and) the Trolley Museum, this is a different kind of history tour,” she said. “This is about Scranton and its roots.”

Guests will meet at 11 a.m. at The Scranton Times building, 149 Penn Ave., for light fare and refreshments in the historic press room. Then, at 11:30, guests will board a luxury bus from Gilbride Limousine, Olyphant, for the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour and a stop at Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum. The group next will head for a tour of Electric City Trolley Museum followed by a tour of the museum inside Steamtown National Historic Site. Finally, the luxury bus will drop off guests behind the Times building at 5 p.m.

In addition to light fare, all entrance fees and round-trip transportation, the $55 ticket includes specialty giveaways and exclusive discounts from participating sponsors. Seating is limited, as a smaller group makes for a more personalized trip, Baptista noted.

The professionally guided Backyard Tours explore and indulge at the area’s top attractions, and specialized tours are planned throughout the year. Prices for future trips may vary, depending on the destination. Private tours for clients, colleagues and people celebrating different occasions also are available.

Baptista said the history tour fits perfectly with Best of Our Backyard Tours’ mission.

“People have lived in this area their whole lives, and they might have never been on the coal mine tour or to Steamtown,” she said. “It’s learning more about the region we live in.”
