Ocean Springs seeks money for proposed parking garage
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi Gulf Coast city wants to use oil spill recovery money to build a public parking garage.
The Mississippi Press reports that Ocean Springs proposes putting the structure on some downtown property the city already owns.
Mayor Shea Dobson says an initial cost estimate for the project is $6 million. Ocean Springs will apply for money that was set aside for recovery projects after the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and could receive a response on the application next year.
If approved, the project would require a 20% local match, and based on a $6 million price tag, the local portion would be $1.2 million. Dobson says most of that would come through investments made by people proposing a mixed-use development for downtown Ocean Springs.
